Originally erected by Richard De Clare (better known as Strong bow) along the River Suir in 1172, the castle saw many different owners through the ensuing decades. In 1967, Arthur Butler, the 6th Marquess and 24th Earl of Ormond, sold the castle for the nominal sum of 50 to the castle restoration committee.
